Bill Frey

William Martin Frey was born June 3, 1902, in Depue, Illinois. It was reported that he attended college for two years. By the late 1920’s, he was living in Madison, Wisconsin, and racing boats. Frey gained fame as an “internationally famed outboard pilot.” Frey was a “development engineer” for the Johnson Outboard Motor Company. He raced boats in Europe and the U.S. and held many outboard racing records.
In 1935, Frey became the athletic trainer at the University of Miami (FL) when they hired Irl Tubbs as the football coach. Tubbs had been at Wisconsin-Superior, prior to going to Miami, so there may have been a
Frey's greatest contribution to atheltic training came when he, along with Chuck Cramer, were the driving forces behind the formation of the original NATA. Frey would serve as executive secretary, basically running the organization, throughout its existence.
Frey would open the “University-City Health Club” and would keep his hand in athletics and athletic training for the remainder of his life. Frey would die on July 27, 1952.
